Historical Experience, Modern Perspective

Samuel F. &  Leonice McCormack

Providing quality and expert service, borne of historical experience and perspective, and riding the waves of change as they come, is what SFMc is all about. Company founder, Sam McCormack brought his ingenuity as a self made building contractor to bear when in 1958 he morphed his building business into insurance adjusting.  The New England Hurricane of 1938, which is still considered the most powerful, costliest and deadliest hurricane in the region’s history, was the first catastrophic event that Sam handled as an adjuster. After liquidating his contractor business in 1958, Sam brought on his eldest son, Robert, and, ten years later in 1968, together they officially formed Samuel F. McCormack Company, Inc.

Robert’s experience as a multi-line insurance appraiser with Aetna Life & Casualty in Hartford, CT added a new dimension to Sam’s contractor background. Robert’s work at SFMc has been touched by many newsworthy events, including the Great Chelsea Fire of 1973, and the Blizzard of 1978. Robert earned his stripes as an on-the-ground CAT trooper after Hurricane Alicia struck in 1983, working in the Houston, TX area, doing adjusting and learning the ropes of CAT operations. Robert came back with the experience and understanding to expand SFMc as a viable source for handling regional CAT events. As a result, SFMc was prepared and able to handle the volume of CAT claims generated by the destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Bob in 1991, and the famous “No Name” or “Perfect” storm that hit New England a couple of months later. Forecasters had difficulty predicting the severity of that storm’s impact but SFMc was fully operational within 24 hours to handle the extra work. It was at this time that SFMc started to make it’s mark in the New England area.

It became evident that SFMc’s base of operations would have to expand. In 2007, the company moved into a new home office building in Braintree, with accommodations for a bigger staff and room for growth. SFMc opened an office in Pocasset, MA in 2009 to make it easier and more expeditious to respond to client needs in southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. SFMc also has branch offices in Riverside, RI and Wentworth, NH.

SFMc has a strong foundation in family connections and commitment. In 1994, Andrew McCormack, currently the Managing Partner, started at SFMc as a junior adjuster; following the adjusters out on claims calls, learning the business from the ground up, taking the initiative to find new ways to do the work that allows SFMc to keep up with new technology. Elizabeth McCormack, SFMc’s Director of HR, worked in the office during school breaks and and came back to SFMc after pursuing her education in the field at a national insurance carrier, bringing experience and her AIC credentials into the family business. Over the years, SFMc has attracted myriad talented professionals from the industry, including staff members who hold a variety of licenses and affiliations, as well as many years of relevant experience in working with national carriers and adjusting firms. SFMc’s well trained and diversely credentialed staff are able to handle the variety of claims issues that arise in the ever-changing landscape of this fast-paced industry.

SFMc is a 45 year industry veteran as well as a current and vital player in the insurance adjusting business in the New England area. SFMc provides excellence, quality and reliability, with a proven track record of success and commitment to efficient customer service. SFMc’s rich history provides context and experience, and evolving technology challenges SFMc’s flexibility and ingenuity to move forward in keeping up with the changing times. With an appreciation for the past and an eye toward the future, the enduring legacy of founder Sam McCormack is well honored and emulated.
